Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can present with a variety of symptoms, and managing money can be challenging for individuals with ADHD. It's important to note that symptoms and challenges can vary from person to person. While everyone experiences ADHD a little bit differently, here are some of the common symptoms of ADHD that could impact your relationship money.

Symptoms of adhd and money

  • Individuals with ADHD may struggle to create and stick to a budget due to difficulties in organizing and planning. They might forget to track expenses, lose track of due dates for bills, or have trouble estimating future expenses accurately. Learn the benefits of using the No Budget Budget to organize your money and fund your savings goals.

  • Impulsivity is a common symptom of ADHD, which can lead to impulsive spending behaviors. Individuals may struggle to resist the temptation to make spontaneous purchases or engage in excessive shopping, even when it's financially detrimental.

  • ADHD can lead to procrastination when it comes to managing financial tasks, such as paying bills, reviewing bank statements, or filing taxes. This procrastination can result in late fees, missed deadlines, and increased financial stress.

  • Individuals with ADHD may struggle with organizing and maintaining financial documents, leading to clutter and disorganization. Important documents such as receipts, bills, and financial statements may get misplaced or forgotten.

  • ADHD inattentiveness may result in individuals overlooking the importance of saving for future goals, such as retirement, emergencies, or major purchases. They may prioritize immediate gratification over long-term financial planning.

adhd and money Client Scenarios

Here are examples of clients with adhd and money anxiety who have benefited from Financial Therapy.

Sarah and alex

Sarah and Alex have been together for four years. They each approach money differently but Alex is underemployed and procrastinates about advancing in his career. There are many things that Alex is passionate about but lacks follow-up. Sarah is the main breadwinner, she works a lot, and resentment has started to creep into their relationship. She would like to not feel as financially responsible as at present. They are burned out from the high cost of living in California and wonder if they will ever have financial compatibility to attain their dreams and goals.

will

Will came to Financial Therapy following years of impulse buying. He reports it would happen in cycles and focus on one item at a time such as shoes, trading cards, or figurines. However, once he collected things they stayed in the closets, the garage, and in different parts of the house. His running up the credit cards and hiding it from his wife until she found a statement was starting to cause ongoing stress and strain in their relationship. Will sought out Financial Therapy to address his compulsions and tendencies towards hoarding
